Boris Johnson goes on holiday as team double fares

Boris Johnson was on holiday as his team slipped out news of bus fares doubling for London's poor, it was revealed today.

The news came out after Boris Johnson was slammed for failing to attend the City Hall organized Africa Day celebrations, in Trafalgar Square yesterday afternoon.

Founder of the African awareness pressure group Ligali, Mr. Toyin Agbetu said of the Mayor's absence:

That Boris Johnson has chosen not to attend just shows his interest in the matter. I’m glad in a way that he did not attend, hearing what his views are, because I don’t think Africans should be used as a political tool, but on another level he has a duty to show up to show the institutional support of London.

The fact that our new mayor failed to turn up to yet another event is not hugely surprising. Nor am I particularly surprised that he has taken a holiday after only three weeks in the job.

However, the fact that he should choose this particular time for the release of what is his most controversial decision yet, is a worrying sign of the sort of leadership we should expect for the next four years.

He's already gone on holiday! The new serious hard working Boris johnson didn't last for very long now did it? How much are we paying him exactly?

What a line-up :D Is this the 'strong team' we heard so much about?

He has just campaigned for four months solid, seven days a week, so anyone reasonable would deduce that the poor so and so was entitled to a holiday.

As for what we are paying him, he has taken a huge cut in salary, to under half of what he was earning before. so he isn't exactly doing the job for the money.

'he has taken a huge cut in salary.'

No he hasn't. He's starting his column again, so he's actually earning more.

'the poor so and so was entitled to a holiday'

Tell it to the poor so and sos who have had their travel costs doubled.

With the greatest respect, Mr. TT, Boris Johnson used to earn about £450,000 p.a.

Of the £250,00 he will be earning from his column, he is donating £100,000 p.a. to charity. The Mayor's salary is £137,000, so he is still taking a decrease.

With even greater respect Angela, he is only donating £50,000 to charity and will retain his MPs salary and expenses plus royalties from his books. The extra status he gets from being London's Mayor will also greatly increase the offers he will receive for any books, appearances, speeches he does from here on in and after he leaves/loses the job. The idea that taking the job will make him poorer is ridiculous.

I wonder where he's gone? Even Tony Blair didn't have the luxury of sneaking off without telling anyone where he was going. Is there a reason why his destination isn't being reported?

He's probably hanging around Colindale. That's not Iain Dale's brother, in case you were getting confused.

Interesting PR from TfL on Tube crime. Substantially down. Crime is now just 'one of Boris' number one priorities'. Wonder what the rest are. Keep up the good work.

Guys, do you honestly think it is reasonable for us to expect to be told where our Mayor goes for his holidays? I loathe this sort of thing, as Adam knows, because I do believe our public figures have a right to a private life and snooping on someone when they are on holiday to me seems appalling.

It is half term, isn't it, so I am sure he is chastely enjoying a sea side break with his wife and kids, but if the Mayor was blowing his salary at the casinos in Monte Carlo, I don't believe we would have the right to approve or disapprove.

He was on a yacht in Turkey. And he valued his privacy so much he got his picture in the Daily Mail.

My point is the Mayor should be allowed his privacy, if he wishes to keep his holiday destination to himself, but if he doesn't, that is up to him.

Your baby niece is so going to cry her eyes out at how mean you are to him..... (JOKE).

Whilst I'm not a fan of Boris, I don't get what all this fuss is about. You'd think nobody ever started a job with a holiday already booked. I've done it myself, accepted a job and gone on holiday within the first month because it was booked/organised before I was offered the job.

Mayors are allowed the same employment rights as the rest of us.

Also tell me how much a CEO of a listed company with a yearly budget of £11 billion would get paid, then you'll see how little the mayor gets paid.
