Newsquest take advertising money from the BNP

I know that local newspapers are struggling at the moment, but this is just shocking:

"Nick Griffin's organization has found a new way of spreading its election propaganda. The BNP are paying for advertising space on the websites of local newspapers. Many of these adverts consist of a large banner headline that stretches across the top of the front page above the newspaper's title.

"They make local newspaper websites look like a BNP publication, with the slogans of the extreme right-wing party dominating the page. Other formats include a simple BNP logo and a video box. Clicking on the adverts takes the reader via a link straight to the BNP's website. All titles noted so far belong to the giant 'Newsquest' group that owns hundreds of local newspapers across the country, and has 164 of what it calls 'local media brand websites'."

Now I'm generally against the no-platform policy. I think that the BNP should be allowed to show themselves up in their own good way and their own good time.

But where I draw the line is in actually taking money from these creeps.

I mean what do Newsquest think they are doing? Do they think that this will endear the majority of their readers to them?

And even if they've given up caring on that score, they could at least try and uphold their own damn policy:

Newsquest is committed to encouraging diversity throughout its workforce.

Our mission is to publish market-leading newspapers which reflect the views of the communities they serve.

To that end, our diversity programme encourages a workforce that reflects local demographics and provides equality and fairness for all who work for us.

We are committed to:

  • Encouraging diversity throughout our business
  • Upholding our equal opportunities policies
  • Monitoring progress in managing diversity

Ironically enough Newsquest were heavily praised last year for deciding to no longer accept adverts from the sex industry.

But while they no longer make money out of exploited and vulnerable women, they now seem more than happy to make money out of prejudice, hatred and fear.

Please make your complaint to the men at the top.

Round our way it's Newsquest or nothing so I guess they think they can do as they pleaseas we don't have any other options.

Well, that's just about every local paper, free or paid for, weekly or daily in my area.

Forgive me if I don't shed a tear when they go down the pan.

I'm feeling let down - I'm F5-ing like crazy on my local Newsquest titles (Dorset Echo, Bournemouth Echo, Southampton Daily Echo) and I haven't seen a BNP banner yet.

Damn you, Nick Griffin!

AdamB said...

Not all Newsquest titles are running them, just the ones that the BNP have bought a place on. My local newsshopper isn't running them either.

YOu can see how they look on Stourbridge News. Lancaster Unity has a list of other titles carrying them.

"Ironically enough Newsquest were heavily praised last year for deciding to no longer accept adverts from the sex industry."

They did this apparently due to the amount of sex trafficking taking place.

Well it's a bit ironic that the hysteria surrounding this issue and no doubt fueled by the media has now come back to bite them with loss of revenue.

I don't really understand your point Anonymous. What are you trying to say?

Nick said...

Sorry Adam, have to disagree with you on this.

If you plan on getting Newsquest to ban ALL political advertising in their newspapers, or on their websites then fair enough - although I would oppose this idea too.

The obnoxious BNP are a legitimate political party, and therefore if they want to spend their money on advertising in newspaper titles then they should be allowed to. Hopefully their spending money in this fashion might prevent them from distributing too much literature door to door - where it would be read by far more people than will see these ads.

Making them martyrs won't help in defeating the scum at the ballot box.

AdamB said...

I don't see how refusing to take money from the BNP makes them Martyrs. By all means give them a chance to make their case (PPBs and the like) but this goes too far in my opinion.

If I was offered a grand to put up a BNP poster in my window (or my blog) I would refuse it. Newsquest should do the same. This isn't about banning or making people martyrs, it's about common sense. The BNP are not a legitimate source of revenue in my eyes. They are a gang of fearmongering thugs with a nasty sideline in violence and intimidation. Newsquest should tell them where to stick it.

It's false advertsing in any case. The men pictured in that BNP ad are not British, they are Americans and the photo is taken from an agency library. Newsquest should not be promoting deliberately misleading advertisements. It is as simple as that.

AdamB said...

Absolutely, you can read the full story on that over here.

J Wild said...

Nick - I do not agree that the BNP is a "legitinate political party". As far as I know it is the only party stadning in this current election which will refuse you membership if your skin is not white.

Don't Call Me Dave said...

I think local newspapers should be wary of accepting advertising from any political party, mainstream or not, because it is always going to offend some of its readers.

But how much control does Newsquest really have over the content of the ads on its web sites? Like many other web sites, they carry Google ads which are content driven. I had them on my blog for a short while until I discovered they were promoting businesses that I was fundamentally opposed to!

If these banner ads were placed on Newsquest’s titles automatically, then the publisher should be excused. But they should now carry out a review of their policy. A newspaper should always be in control of the advertising it carries.

AdamB said...

They aren't Google ads. Newsquest sell their advertising slots themselves.

God, I love the smell of panicking tories in the afternoon!

Made my day, thanks guys.

AdamB said...

Not many tories here I'm afraid, although I doubt they would be panicking if they were Mr. BNP. The Conservative Party are heading into government and a potential landslide. The BNP are heading to a few councillors and potentially (if you're really really lucky) one very lonely MEP.

Good discussion here from one editor from a newspaper group who refused BNP ads:

Green Arrow: I hope you get all the publicity you deserve. You and the likes of your associate bfbwwiii show all that needs to be known about the BNP.

J Wild said...

Green Arrow - could you share with us the BNP's policy on the Gurkhas? Just how black do you need to be before becoming a candidate for repatriation?

Anonymous said...

J Wild, please dont ever extend an invitation of the Green Arrow like that, this prat could bore for England, he has not got a clue about policy, certainly not BNP policy because their Leader doesnt even have a clue.

The Green Arrow is what some would call an armchair warrior, not me though because the title warrior suggests he has the stomache for a fight and believe me the Green Arrow doesnt have that.

So please no more invitations because i actually enjoy clicking on to this blog and posting and having to put up with a diatribe from green arrow would really put me off.

How strange. I tried to leave (my first ever) comment on 'Green Arrow's' site (under a post slagging me off) only to then find myself instantly banned from viewing the site.

Ironically enough he accused me of trying to squash his freedom of speech!

Those who wish to make thtir view known to the Green Arsehole Should be aware that his home addresses, telephone etc numbers are still available as part of the Nutzie membership list at Wiki Leakes, and in the public domain.

His main home and his holiday home are viewable on Google.

Let these damn fool useless local papers go under. On the internets, we don't have to carry the bags of BNP scum unless we're bigoted enough to want to.

Let them all go under and the God of the Internets shall know His own.

"AdamB said...I don't really understand your point Anonymous. What are you trying to say?"

The original article mentioned that Newsquest have stopped advertising "sex ads"

Further investigation ie by clicking on links supplied by this blog shows that Newsquest did this in response to people's anger with regards sex trafficking.

With me so far?

Yes?

Now supply me with the figures on sex trafficking.

I bet you can't but what you can supply me with a lots of ficticous nonsense that the media bought into and now as in Newsquest's case has hit their revenue.

So it's backfired.

Well you seem to have a problem with the BNP advertising itself in the media so I guess it's a valued conclusion.

Taking less money from brothels and criminal gangs would have hit their advertising revenue, yes. That's why it was a principled decision to stop taking it. And your point is?

"Well you seem to have a problem with the BNP advertising itself in the media so I guess it's a valued conclusion. "

Not really. I've allowed BNP supporters to comment here. Green Arrow tried to ban me from commenting there (and placed a banning cookie on my computer).

Britain Awake, I’m only second generation British, so would you like me to fuck off also “back” to a country I have never set foot in?

Of course, I would have to close down my business and put all of my “pure” English staff on the dole, but not to worry. And I’m sure the government can manage without all the corporation and personal taxes I pay as well. The money they spent on your education was clearly wasted.

I’m a Conservative but would rather live under a socialist government then let morons like you anywhere near the reins of power. Pity there was nothing better on the telly the night you were conceived.

And this is why I think censorship is wrong. In order to understand the truth, you have to have the facts. In this case, when people see just how ugly, offensive and un-British the BNP are, they will simply be ignored.

Hey...a Google ID, whatever next!

AdamB @2251: the point Anon is, correctly, making, is that nearly all prostitution in the UK is consensual and only carried out by "criminal gangs" in the obvious and literal sense that providing a house for prostitutes to work out of, even if it's an egalitarian women's co-op, is illegal.

Widespread forced trafficking is made up; it's a convenient fiction that unites hardcore anti-sex feminists and hardcore anti-sex conservatives in pushing their illiberal agenda.

Newsquest was wrong to give into the hysteria last year, and it's a bit of a devastating indictment of their 'principles' that handjobs for lonely old men are viewed as worse than demented Nazis who want to kick out the blacks...

AdamB said...

I'm not aware of too many 'egalitarian women's co-ops' around here John although perhaps I don't get out enough.

The sex industry trades on the poverty, addictions and vulnerability of women in this country and abroad. It's very hard to distinguish between the few friendly co-ops and the many gangs of sleazebags so if I was a newspaper editor I wouldn't take money from any of them as a rule. That's not being illiberal, it's being principled.

As I've said above, I'm not suggesting banning any organisation from advertising in newspapers or elsewhere, just suggesting that those selling their advertising space should be more selective, especially those newspapers who pretend to represent their communities.

Congratulations to Adam for taking a strong position against the BNP.

They are not a legitimate party, they are Nazi scum and should be opposed everywhere they raise their head.

Making concessions never stopped Hitler.

When I turned it over, I saw it was actually from Dave and had my name and address on the front.

As with most pompous middle class journalists you make sweeping assumptions and dress it up to suit your own sick twisted anti-democratic agenda!
